A recent report that emerged stated that a pastor asked the women in his congregation to attend church without any underwear on. Other articles reported false prophets touching women’s breast and asking them to perform oral sex as ejaculation indicates a presence of the Holy Spirit.
Sadly, practices such as the above are very common within a lot of African communities. There have been a lot of upcoming cases on social media of concerns of a similar nature whereby preachers are proclaiming Gods name for wrong purposes.
Within the African community, there is a mentality whereby a person’s success and status is determined by a British passport, children, marriage, money, good health and education.
Within this community, many are raised as Christians and seek for guidance from God as their main source of support. Due to this trust and belief in God (who is held at high regards), it is often assumed that anything associated with God must be good because “God only wants the best for his children”.
This need for success often transpires to people seeking for support from various sources in hopes to feel like they belong within their communities. The fear of isolation and social exclusion often contributes a great deal to this need for success. Subsequently, this need for success creates vulnerabilities among people in the community who are often willing to do anything to gain the things they desperately desire.
False prophets proclaiming to be from God prey on individual’s vulnerabilities and desires for success by duping, abusing and exploiting victims to meet their own personal desires.
So who is to blame?
Believers proclaim to be followers of Christ but yet do not practice Gods word and his commands. We adapt the Lord’s word to suit our needs instead of applying it holistically to our lives.
Dedicated Christians, who reads the bible, will know that a preacher asking to touch one’s breast is not in the bible. A dedicated Christian will know that a preacher asking for sexual favours is not a command in the bible. The bible commands to first seek the kingdom of God and all things will be added unto you – Mathew 6:33.
The bible reports that, if one has as little faith as a mustard seed one can move mountains (Mathew 17:20). The bible reports that, by his strips we are healed (Isiah 53:5) , it talks about asking God for our desires and receiving what we ask for (Mathew 7:7). So who is to blame, do we blame ourselves for not following God’s commands or, do we blame these self-proclaimed pastors?
2 Peter 2:1-3 states but there were false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them-bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of the truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories.
This article is targeted at Christians who have strong desires to have it all, strong desires for money, babies, passports, fame and marriages. If a believer is not married by the age of 25, it does not mean that the individual is not marriage material. It means that’s God is still preparing the individual for their spouse, delay does not mean denial.
Instead of focusing our attention on worldly desires, we should dedicate our attention into producing fruits in spirit. We as a community are putting pressures on ourselves by creating this false ideology and definition of status and success.
Pressures from relative, friends and our own communities to maintain a certain lifestyle lead people astray. Seeking for support from a prophet who does not direct you back to God should raise concerns regarding the legitimacy of the prophet.
Reading the Bible creates a personal bond/relationship between the reader and God. Reading the Bible creates an open heart and ears to God’s voice. The Holy Ghost Spirit is a powerful resource each saved Christian has. The purpose of The Holy Ghost Spirit is to comfort, guide and direct believers. It is therefore, vital to be patient and allow The Holy Ghost Spirit to direct and guide.
For the false prophets, if God did not spare the angels and sent them to hell when they sinned, if he did not spare ancient world when he brought a flood to destroy the grounds he created, “he knows how to rescue the godly from trails and to holds the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgement” 2 Peter 2:9.
